When people undergo routine medical procedures, hospital staff members typically assure them not to be concerned. After all, if it is something the doctors and nurses have successfully done numerous times and unlikely to present any complications, there should be no reason to be nervous.
However, even routine procedures can take a turn when medical workers make mistakes. Recently, for example, Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker filed a lawsuit against a medical center after he says he developed severe injuries during a routine MRI.
When routine goes wrong
According to reports, Barker visited an imaging center to get a routine MRI before his band was to set off on a tour. However, during the appointment, technicians attempting to sedate him for the MRI allegedly stuck him at least 40 times with a dirty needle trying to find a vein.
The lawsuit says that the excessive pokes with a contaminated needle caused Barker to suffer nerve damage in his arms and develop a staph infection. He also developed blood clots in his arms.
As a result, Barker has been prohibited by his doctors from drumming. He says he has had to miss or postpone numerous events and filed a lawsuit to hold the medical center accountable for these and other damages suffered.
What to do in similar circumstances
Barker’s medical woes can be a grim reminder to readers here in New Mexico that medical mistakes can happen to anyone. And when they do, there are often damages caused by that mistake. In a similar situation, you may not have a national tour or Las Vegas residency on the line, but you could still be facing medical bills, lost wages, emotional distress and other considerable damages because of a medical mistake.
Under these circumstances, knowing your rights and the legal remedies that may be available can help you assess your options on what you can do to make it easier to cope with your injuries.
