When (and where) are truck accidents more likely to happen?

Truck accidents are among the most devastating types of collisions. Every year, thousands of people die in these crashes; many more get injured.

While it is not possible to stop every truck accident, it is possible to prevent some of them. One way to do this is by understanding when and where truck crashes are more likely to occur. This awareness can help drivers make better decisions and hopefully avoid an accident.

When are truck accidents most likely to occur?

According to data from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, truck crashes happened the most:

  • During the day, between noon and 3 p.m.
  • On weekdays, especially on Wednesdays and Thursdays
  • When the weather is clear

Where are they most likely to occur?

In 2016, most fatal and injury-causing accidents involving large trucks and buses happened:

  • Not at an intersection
  • On dry, paved roads
  • On roads where the speed limit is 50-55 mph
  • On rural and urban interstates

Why do these crashes happen?

As you can see, factors like weather, poor visibility and traffic congestion are not as big of an issue as people might expect when it comes to truck accidents. Rather, many could be the result of unforced, driver errors.

In other words, these accidents could be happening because a driver is impaired or speeding; they could stem from inattention or defective parts that lead to loss of control; following too closely or cutting other vehicles off could also lead to crashes involving trucks.

Considering how many crashes could be avoided with better decisions by the drivers, it can be crucial for victims of truck accidents to discuss their legal options with an attorney. It may be possible for injured parties and their families to recover compensation for the damages caused by a negligent driver.
