3 types of distracted driving that can impact truckers

Do you spend a lot of time behind the wheel of your car? If so, you realize just how difficult it can be to maintain your focus at all times.

No matter how hard you try, you may be tempted to pick up your cell phone when you should be watching the road. And no matter how hard you try, there will be times when you turn around to see what your child or pet is doing in the back seat.

It's important to understand that other drivers face the same temptations. For example, truckers are on the road for many hours every day. As a result, they often fall prey to these temptations, which increases the likelihood of their causing an accident.

There are three primary types of distracted driving, all of which can impact truckers:

  • Visual distraction. This is when the driver looks at something other than the road in front of them. There are many types of visual distractions in a truck, ranging from maps to a cell phone to a GPS system.
  • Cognitive distraction. It can be difficult for truckers to maintain their focus hour after hour. A cognitive distraction is something that takes a person's mind away from the road. For example, truckers may begin to think about what they're going to do once they reach their destination.
  • Manual distraction. This is exactly what it sounds like, and it's a very common distraction for all motorists. There is never a good time for a trucker to take one or both hands off the wheel. However, this happens every now and again. Some of the top causes of manual distraction include picking up a cell phone, taking a drink of a beverage or grabbing for a map that is under a seat.

All three types of distracted driving are hazardous, as they can lead to a severe accident that causes injury or even death.

If you are part of an accident with a commercial truck, you shouldn't wait to call for help and check yourself for injuries. In addition to receiving medical attention, make sure you soon learn more about your legal rights.
