Trucking accidents: Factors that influence the risk of a wreck

Trucking crashes are some of the most devastating, and often it's easy to blame the driver of the commercial vehicle. The truth is that either party can be to blame in a commercial crash. Sometimes cars get too close to commercial drivers who can't slow down in time to prevent from hitting them. Other times, a commercial driver may forget to look alongside his or her vehicle, leading to a crash into the driver in the next lane.

Between negligence, hazards and dangerous driving techniques, there are plenty of reasons to be wary of driving. Many factors influence crashes including the three following issues.

1. Blind spots

It's in a driver's best interests to avoid driving in a commercial truck's blind spots. Those are the areas close to the rear of the vehicle and on either side. Commercial drivers should make sure to check both sides of the vehicle before moving into another lane.

2. Distractions

Distractions are another problem for drivers of all types. There are federal laws that restrict commercial drivers from being on a cellphone or using electronic devices while they drive. Equally, there are restrictions on all drivers that make sure they're not using cellphones or texting behind the wheel. Any distraction, whether it's eating or talking on the phone, can lead to a crash.

3. Poor vehicular maintenance

Finally, poor maintenance can affect a crash. If a tire blows or items you're carrying fall off your vehicle, there's a risk of causing a crash. Make sure everything you carry, whether you're in a passenger vehicle or truck, is tethered down and ready to travel.

These are a few factors that influence crashes. Be safe on the roads. Don't get distracted, keep your vehicle in good condition and remember to avoid blind spots for your own safety.
