Things you can do to prevent a truck accident

As the driver of a passenger vehicle, you have no control over other people on the road. For example, you'll always be in close proximity to commercial trucks, and, obviously, you can't control the decisions these drivers make.

Fortunately, there are steps you can take to help prevent a truck accident. Again, there is no guarantee that you will never run into trouble, but you might as well do whatever you can to remain safe.

Here are some of the many steps you can personally take to prevent a truck accident:

  • Make it easy for truckers to see your vehicle, such as by avoiding the "no-zones"
  • Never change lanes abruptly in front of a truck, as they may not be able to slow down
  • Never pass a truck in the right lane on the interstate
  • When merging, don't do anything that will cause a truck to make a quick maneuver
  • Do your best to avoid driving between two commercial trucks
  • If you are pulling over to the shoulder of the road, don't leave your vehicle close to the lane line

When you do these things, it's less likely that you will be part of a truck accident in the future. You still have to concern yourself with a trucker making a mistake, such as using a cellphone or driving drowsy, but at least you have full control over everything you're doing.

In the event of a truck accident, there's a good chance you'll suffer an injury and your vehicle will no longer be operational. With this in mind, you want to do whatever it takes to bring police and an ambulance to the scene as quickly as possible. This typically means calling 911, as long as you are in condition to do so.

Once you receive treatment and review the cause of the truck accident, you can learn more about your legal rights. You need to focus on your health and well-being, but it's also imperative to understand your rights to receive compensation for your injuries and other damages.
